What is 4G

If you found this site, you are wondering What is 4G. You’ve seen all the commercials on TV. You know the ones with all the different cell phone carriers promising you 4G speeds. But you still ask yourself, “What is 4G”. Don’t worry, your not alone. There are a lot of people asking the same question.

4G short for 4th generation wireless. It is the new, faster wireless network that today’s smartphones use. Phone like the Droid, Iphone, Blackberry and more all use some type of 4G network. Before 4g was revealed to the market, 3g and 2g were the two main internet networks available. The main focus of many phone companies was to increase the wireless network speed. This increase in speed means faster video, internet browsing and and all around greater experience on mobile devices.

One thing to be aware of that all of the different mobile phone providers use the term “4G” to mean a lot of different things. AT&T for example has 4G, and 4G LTE. What is 4G History

3G or third generation used an entire infrastructure that was built specifically for 3G connectivity. This infrastructure was updated to support new 4G speeds. This allows cellular companies like AT&T and Verizon to utilize the same network, keep the same coverage and provide faster 4G speeds.

4G Security

The upgrade to 4G also addresses security issues that were part of the legacy 3G networks. The previous network did a poor job of protecting the IP addresses (It is the address of one’s phone which some people do not want to be seen by just anyone) of people’s phones. 4g will be more protective of this kind of information. Also, usually when using the same network, wireless browsers tend to slow down. However, 4g will sustain its speed even when somebody else is using the same network.

What is 4G’s Future

A lot of companies have already invested in 4g in order to build the new versions of their phones with much faster What is 4Gwireless capabilities. For instance, Nextel Telecommunications Company has already invested roughly $3 billion in building up more 4g-based phones. But United States is not the first one to have 4g wireless. Other countries have so far tested 4g and some of them will permanently use it. For instance, in 2010 Armenia’s VivaCell Telecommunications Company has announced that they will do a test of 4g in its capital of Yerevan. The test happened to be a success and now VivaCell is looking forward to sign a contract with Long-Term Evolution (LTE), which is a network research company.

Hopefully next time your hear someone ask, What is 4G, you will be able to tell them that 4G is wireless data network used by a lot of different cell phone companies. Without we would never be able to update our high score on Angry Birds!
